WTF? makes ‘going green’ a part of its mission

Behind the scenes at Why The Fuss? Technical Solutions, we have already made eco-friendly adjustments in our lives and made many energy-efficient improvements to our home (and home-based office). In addition, we wanted to support our customers and the Earth as a whole by reducing the business’s environmental impact.

While you may have only begun to hear in the past couple years about the “green” movement, it is far more than just a passing trend to Eric Kuznacic, president and founder of WTF? Technical Solutions.

From a young age he has acted as an environmental steward by encouraging the re-use, re-purposing and recycling of as much waste as possible; participating in Earth-friendly activities such as roadside cleanups; and working to reduce his household’s energy use via the installation of Energy Star-rated appliances, heating and cooling units and electronic devices. Eric even has tracked his home’s energy use for the past several years, both as evidence that these improvements are worth the investment and also to help identify ways in which further savings can be realized. So, how can web hosting be green? Doesn’t it require all sorts of electricity (and water, if using a hydroelectric source) to power all those servers across multiple locations?

Short answer: It doesn’t have to.

Producing wind power on a small scale requires a ton of resources — have you seen how big those towers are? — so WTF? Technical Solutions figured out another way to minimize its environmental footprint: Partner with a web-hosting firm that invests twice the amount of electricity it takes to power their web-hosting servers and office buildings! This purchase makes a difference for the environment and promotes our nation’s energy independence.

The Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are supplied by leading renewable energy marketer and developer, Community Energy, and represent the environmental benefits of wind energy and reduce the amount of electricity in the energy grid that’s produced by fossil fuels.

Think such a small step can’t make a difference? Think again! Between 7/1/2011 and 6/30/2013 this commitment allowed more than 2.9 million kWh of wind energy to enter into the national electricity grid. The estimated annual environmental benefit is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 213 acres of trees or by removing 196 passenger vehicles from the road!

So, what does this mean for you as a Why The Fuss? customer?

That means that by hosting with us, your site is green, too!
